Rounds 3&4 - Jarama - The Highs and Lows of Motorsport

The third and fourth races of the 2009 European F3 Open Championships were held at Jarama over the weekend of the 5th to 7th June. Just outside Madrid, the event always brings a big and enthusiastic crowd which gives the race weekend a good atmosphere. Testing started well for Callum fastest of the Copa Class of cars. Qualifying was less satisfactory though, with Callum lower than expected in 11th. For race one, both drivers were fired up and ready to progress with Callum making passes to run eighth early on, leading the Cup class. With some rain on part of the circuit just after half distance, the two Team West-Tec cars were easily the fastest on the track and moved up to sixth and seventh and looked set to progress further lapping considerably faster than the leaders at this stage. Unfortunately, the race was then neutralised behind the safety car following an accident further down the order and, when racing resumed, the rain had stopped with the track drying quickly. With just three laps to go Callum went on the attack but were unable to progress further as those in front defended strongly.

Nonetheless these were good results, with Callum taking the Copa Class win and qualifying to start from outright pole for Sunday’s race. On Sunday, which resolutely stayed dry for the F3 race, Callum made a good getaway from pole to lead but it all went wrong at the first corner as the leaders all tried to outbrake each other. Callum braked just fractionally too late and, along with two other cars, ran wide and subsequently dropped right down the field. On lap two, and keen to make amends Callum was fighting his way through the slower cars when he was unluckily taken out by one and ended his race in the gravel with bent suspension.
Overall these results leave Callum leading the Copa Class after four races, and Christian got his season going two decent points finishes.

Callum Macleod: Saturday was obviously a great result for us, although it went very wrong on Sunday. I am now looking forward to Spa.

John Miller, Co-Team Principal: Overall I think this was a good weekend for us, with Callum taking his first Copa Class win and now leading that championship. Sunday clearly didn’t go as planned for him but it is all a learning experience and I am sure this will stand him in good stead in the future.
