Motul Team West-Tec decamped to Jarama, Madrid for the second weekend of the 2010 European F3 Open on the weekend on 4-6 June, with championship frontrunner Callum Macleod.
With Callum being just one point off the overall lead of the series, the team was looking forward to another good weekend, with the young Spaniard looking to uphold team honour in the Copa class, for the slightly older 2006 cars.
After a challenging test day in the scorching temperatures enjoyed all weekend, Callum qualified a lowly (for him) eighth on the grid.
At the start of race one, Callum made a good start to gain places as he concentrated on achieving a solid race finish.
Callum drove a sensible and mature race to finish in the top six in his Abacus Insurance Services backed car, which secured him a decent points yield as well as a good slot for Sunday’s race two grid which would be televised live across much of Europe.
On Sunday, Callum immediately jumped into a lead which he was never to lose, controlling Jose Luis Abadin and Marco Barba behind him, to take a second race win of the year and leave him locked in a battle at the head of the points with the experienced Barba.
With the leading players never separated by more than two seconds, they swapped fastest laps, before Callum took the chequered flag in front of the massive and appreciative crowd to maintain Motul Team West-Tec’s winning record in the series.
The 2010 European F3 Open will now reconvene at the world-famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium on 25-27 June.
With the team having taken three wins and six podiums there in the last two years hopes will be high for another stellar weekend.
John Miller, Motul Team West-Tec:
Both of our drivers were very fast this weekend. Callum struggled a little with set up on Friday and, in such an amazingly tight qualifying session, paid for it heavily. To fight back and win race two was an immense effort and I am so proud of him and all of the crew who worked tirelessly to that end.
Ramon is also a very talented driver and we invited him to race following some impressive testing with us back in Britain. He was stunningly fast, although inexperience cost him two surefire Copa wins which was a shame. However, his speed is not in doubt and I am sure he is going to have a very bright future. We have more testing with him scheduled.
We now go to Spa which has always been good to us, so we will be looking for more top results there.
Callum Macleod:
Jarama was always going to be a challenging weekend for us as we were unable to attend the recent test there. However, I was delighted to win on Sunday and the car was perfect by then. A special thanks to the team for all of their hard work. Now for Spa, where I got an overall podium last year in the Copa car – so I am really looking forward to that!
