Callum Shines At Spa

Callum takes two great results to close the gap at the top of the table, only denied a sensational win by a piece of flapping bodywork, while Victor takes two tremendous second places in Copa on his debut with the team and Kristjan also gets in the points in Copa.

Motul Team West-Tec moved to Spa, the iconic home of the Belgian Grand Prix, for the third weekend of the 2010 European F3 Open on the last weekend in June, with championship leading light Callum Macleod being joined by new permanent team signing Victor Correa, from Brazil, as well as team regular Kristjan Einar finally making his 2010 bow after early season problems.

Callum led the way for the team in qualifying as he gridded third, despite being the first of the frontrunners to not benefit from a tow, while Victor took a great second in the Copa Class on the fringes of the top ten overall with Kristjan in sixth in Copa, in these his first days back in any racing car in almost eight months.

Callum made a good start to race one and took the lead on the run to Les Combes on lap one. Being overtaken by archrival Barba on lap two, the young Englishman then repassed on lap four and was able to break the tow to move away into a comfortable lead. That should have been it but with five laps to go, Callum’s engine cover came loose with a broken fixing and started lifting on the straights – effectively giving him a big airbrake! This allowed Barba to close back in and sweep past on the last lap which was very disappointing for the team, but Macleod was able to hold on for what was still a tremendous, professional drive to hold second place.

Victor was in a massive scrap of, sometimes, eight cars and held his own before making up ground with some daring overtaking manouvres to finish in a strong second in Copa and eighth overall.

Kristjan was involved in a race long battle with young Spaniard Pedro Quesada and brought his car home seventh in Copa.

Callum made another strong start to Sunday’s race from the reverse grid and was involved in a furious scrap for second, third and fourth for several laps. Eventually making second place his own, Callum broke clear and rapidly started to close down leader Filgueira although he ran out of laps and had to settle for second, although setting fastest lap along the way was also a bonus.

Victor continued to improve in his first weekend with the team running as high as fourth overall, and immediately behind teammate Macleod, before losing out and being pushed back to sixth in some frantic action, which was again an excellent second in Copa. Victor also managed to set the second fastest lap of the race overall, behind Callum, to show the pace of his car.

Kristjan had another megascrap with Quesada for the whole race and scored good points with a solid fourth placed finish in Copa, which could easily have been third and on the podium as he was overtaken at the scene of an accident on track close to the end.

So, a good weekend for the team with four podium finishes. Callum has closed up to just five points behind Barba in the chase for the title as the two pull ever clearer of their pursuers, while Victor made a stunning debut, allowing for the fact that this was the first time he had even driven the West-Tec car which has also allowed Motul Team West-Tec to consolidate its strong second position in the Teams classification.
