After the summer break, Team West-Tec resumed its attack on the 2010 European F3 Open at Brands Hatch on the weekend on 18-19 September, with Callum Macleod and Victor Correa’s Motul Team West-Tec cars being joined by Michael Ho in the new Champ Motorsport with Team West-Tec car.
In a very exciting qualifying session Callum took pole position outright, backed up by Victor being conclusively quickest in the Copa class in seventh overall, despite the young Brazilian being stranded on track with a transmission problem after just four fast laps. Michael qualified fifteenth as he drove the car for the first time.
For race one, televised live, Callum was beaten away by archrival Marco Barba and the two raced away at the head of the field. After a mid-race safety car to clear up debris from a crash lower down the order, Callum got alongside Barba but was firmly rebuffed, suffering slight damage in the process, and finished second.
Victor was very unlucky to suffer a driveshaft breakage at the start, probably a legacy of his problems in qualifying, and Michael brought his car home fifth in Copa, to earn his first class points which he was delighted with.
For race two, with its reverse grid, all of the Team West-Tec cars made strong starts. Callum jumped from fifth on the grid to fourth at the start, repulsing Barba, and then made a stunning pass on Juan Carlos Sistos to move up to third.
The man on the move in the whole grid was Correa, Victor made a good start and then passed cars to move up well into the top ten overall and into third position in Copa, right behind the two class leaders, clearly quicker than both.
Another safety car was then called for, after another crash, which stopped both Callum and Victor progressing more.
At the restart Callum held position and despite being quicker than the cars in front was unable to find a way past and held third to the flag, comfortably ahead of Barba.
For Victor the safety car was a total disaster for, as the cars were out on the back of the circuit he was assaulted from behind by an out-of-control rival in a needless accident which brought an end to a very disappointing weekend for the rapid Paulista.
Michael had pitted to replace a punctured tyre after first lap battling, although the safety car helped him recover and he finished in a solid fourth place in Copa to add to his points tally for the weekend.
The championship now moves to world-famous Monza in Italy in two weekes time with Callum just six points behind Barba when dropped scores are taking into account, due to Barba’s exclusion from race one in Magny Cours.
